CNC Milling Capabilities
Review machined faces, pockets, holes and interfaces around the geometry, datum requirements and final condition of your part.
Start with the Features
Identify the faces, pockets, holes and mating features that define the part’s function. Include the complete geometry and relevant drawing notes. A useful milling review connects those features to access, workholding and inspection rather than only showing the external shape.
Review Feature Access
Deep pockets, internal corners, thin walls and obstructed features may require particular attention during route review.
Confirm Before You Order
- Identify the surfaces and geometry that cannot change.
- Any proposed adjustment to improve access must be approved before it becomes part of the manufacturing basis.
Keep Interfaces Connected
Identify datum references and relationships between features produced from different orientations. Workholding and setup decisions should preserve the agreed functional and inspection requirements. Provide mating information where the drawing alone does not fully explain the interface.
Specify the Final Condition
Include the material grade and condition, finishing requirements and protected surfaces. Highlight features accepted after coating, treatment or polishing. These requirements can affect the route and should be part of the quotation review from the beginning.
See the Relevant Operation
Review footage or photographs showing the relevant milling area, component and operation. Confirm the site and the scope demonstrated. An operation video supports a process discussion; dimensional acceptance must be supported by the agreed inspection evidence.
Verify the Critical Relationships
Define the size, location, geometry and surface checks that matter to the assembly. Identify the required report and sample basis. Keep visual appearance, dimensional inspection and functional assembly checks separate so approval covers the right requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I provide both the model and drawing for milling?
Provide both when dimensions, tolerances, datums, finish or other requirements are not fully represented in the model.
Does a milled part always require five-axis machining?
No. Axis count is a route decision based on the component and setup requirements, not a default requirement for every part.
Can the part be machined from different orientations?
The route must preserve the required relationships between features. Explain datum references and critical interfaces during review.
Can I approve a geometry change during quotation?
Yes, through the appropriate design authorization. Record the approved change so the final drawing and quotation basis agree.
Can milling inquiries include repeat production?
Yes. State the initial and repeat quantity requirements and identify the approval and revision controls expected for later orders.
Can you review a deep pocket or internal corner?
Submit the complete geometry and identify features that cannot change. Access and any proposed alternatives need a part-specific review.
How should thin walls be specified?
Identify the required geometry, functional surfaces and acceptance conditions. Do not replace a drawing-specific review with a universal wall-thickness promise.
Will coating be included in the dimensional review?
It should be when final dimensions or fits are affected. Specify the acceptance state and any masking or protection requirements.
Do milling videos prove the final tolerance?
No. They show operations. The agreed inspection method and results provide the relevant dimensional evidence.
What should I send for a milling quotation?
Send the controlled geometry, material condition, critical features, finish, quantity and required inspection records.
Discuss Your Requirements
Share your part type, current drawing revision and the question you need to resolve. Include the quantity and delivery destination when a quotation is required.
