Materials for Precision Components

Specify the grade, material condition and documentation your component needs before comparing manufacturing quotations.

01Manufacturing

Name the Complete Specification

A material family is not a complete specification.

Include the grade, governing standard where required, delivery condition and any additional acceptance requirement. For a repeat order, identify the previously approved specification rather than relying on a broad description such as aluminum or tool steel.

Materials for CNC Parts

Begin with the requirement for the assembly: stiffness, weight, corrosion exposure, conductivity or another specified function. State the selected material and condition on your drawing. Aluminum alloys, steels, copper alloys and engineering plastics are discussion categories, not a blanket promise that every grade or part is available.

02ManufacturingTooling component material and hardness requirements
  1. 01

    Tooling Material and Hardness

For stamping die components, identify the working function, specified tool material, heat treatment condition and hardness requirement. Cutting, forming and wear-related components should not automatically use the same material basis. Include any required coating and the final dimensional acceptance condition.

  2. 02

    Mold Component Requirements

For injection mold components, connect the material specification to the forming surface, fitting interface and service requirements. State any specified hardness, polishing, corrosion-related or treatment requirement. Discuss alternatives separately; a familiar grade name is not approval to substitute another material.

  3. 03

    Define the Required Records

Request the documentation needed for your project before production. Identify the material lot information, certificate type or additional verification that must accompany the order. Agree how the records connect to the supplied components and whether any disclosure restrictions apply.

  4. 04

    Approve Substitutions Explicitly

A proposed material alternative needs a documented review of the applicable specification and functional requirements. Do not approve a substitute on the basis of a cross-reference name alone. Keep the accepted material, condition and any associated changes in the final drawing or order record.

03FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is aluminum a sufficient material specification?

No. State the required alloy and condition, with the governing specification where applicable. Broad family names leave important requirements unresolved.

Can a Chinese grade replace a foreign grade?

Not automatically. Review the relevant specifications and functional requirements, then obtain written approval for any proposed substitute.

Can I request a material certificate?

Specify the document required at quotation stage, including the identification or traceability information needed for your order.

How should a replacement part material be specified?

Use the original approved specification where available. A worn or unidentified sample does not automatically establish grade or heat treatment history.

What information is needed for engineering plastics?

State the grade and any relevant condition, application or documentation requirement. Do not rely only on a generic plastic family name.

Do you stock every listed material?

A discussion category does not establish stock availability. Confirm the actual grade, condition and sourcing basis for your quotation.

Should hardness be specified separately?

When hardness is an acceptance requirement, identify the required condition and applicable verification. Do not assume it is established by the material name alone.

Is a hardness result a material certificate?

No. The records answer different questions. Identify which documentation and checks your project requires.

Can finishing change the material discussion?

Yes. The selected material and condition must be compatible with the specified finishing route and final acceptance requirements.

How do I keep repeat orders consistent?

Reference the approved grade, specification and condition, and identify any proposed sourcing or treatment change for review.
