What This Page Covers
Start with the Feature
Identify what must be verified: a size, a location, a profile, a thread, a surface condition or a material property. The selected method should suit the feature, access conditions and acceptance requirement. No single instrument answers every inspection question.
Dimensional Verification
Discuss suitable methods for accessible sizes, geometric features and relationships to datums. Depending on the requirement, the review may involve micrometers, gauges, optical measurement or coordinate measurement. Confirm the method actually available for your part and the form of the resulting record.
Beyond Dimensional Checks
Surface roughness, hardness, thread acceptance and other specified conditions need their own verification approach. A clear photograph may support a visual review, but it does not replace a required measurement or test. Identify the applicable requirement and acceptance record before ordering.
Review the Equipment Record
For an important inspection requirement, request the relevant instrument type, working range, calibration status and application. Review these together with the measurement setup. A display resolution or machine specification should not be presented as a universal measurement capability.
Agree How to Measure
Where the result depends on setup or interpretation, discuss datum establishment, support, feature access and the state of the part during measurement.
Matching these assumptions helps avoid disagreements between two inspection reports that appear to cover the same drawing.
01Does a machine list prove measurement capability?
No. The feature, working range, setup and applicable calibration information must be reviewed together.
02Is instrument resolution the same as measurement accuracy?
No. Do not use the number of displayed digits as a standalone statement of achievable measurement accuracy.
03Can a photograph prove surface roughness?
A photograph can show visible appearance. A specified roughness requirement needs the agreed measurement method and record.
04Can a CMM inspect every internal feature?
Feature access and the measurement setup affect what can be verified. Review inaccessible or deep features before committing to a method.
05What should a thread inspection request include?
State the thread designation, class or tolerance requirement and the acceptance method or gauge requirement when specified.
06Can I request calibration information?
Request the records relevant to the instruments used for the agreed inspection. Availability and disclosure scope need to be confirmed.
07Do you use external testing?
Any external testing required for the project should be identified in the quotation or inspection plan rather than implied to be in-house.
08How do we avoid conflicting measurements?
Agree the drawing revision, datum setup, measurement condition and method for sensitive characteristics before comparing results.
09Can inspection data be supplied in my template?
Provide the required template and data fields in advance. Confirm feasibility and scope during the quotation review.
10What should I send for a measurement review?
Send the controlled drawing, highlighted features and your intended acceptance method. Include access constraints or a required report format.
Discuss Your Requirements
Share your part type, current drawing revision and the question you need to resolve. Include the quantity and delivery destination when a quotation is required.
