EDM and Wire EDM
Review tooling profiles and features that need an EDM route, with material condition, datum relationships and final acceptance defined.
Identify the Working Feature
Show the profile, cavity, slot or other feature requiring review, and explain its role in the tool. Include the material and condition, mating references and final surface requirements. The function of the feature determines what needs to be preserved and verified.
Separate the Two Routes
Wire EDM and sinker EDM address different feature and access situations. Request a route review for the complete geometry rather than specifying either process by name alone. Material suitability, access, reference surfaces and subsequent work need to be confirmed for the proposed operation.
Agree the Manufacturing Basis
Clarify which dimensions represent the finished requirement and which, if any, are process allowances. Include corners, radii, lead-in or access features when relevant. Do not allow an undocumented manufacturing assumption to change a cutting profile or mating interface.
- 01
Specify the Surface Condition
State the required delivered surface and any subsequent finishing work. Where the tool function imposes additional surface-integrity or treatment requirements, include the applicable specification and acceptance method. An EDM operation alone should not be described as completing every surface requirement.
- 02
Review Site-Specific Evidence
Look for the actual operation, relevant component and responsible manufacturing site. A finished profile photograph can support a geometry discussion, but it does not identify the complete process history or prove a particular tolerance. Request the evidence appropriate to your requirement.
- 03
Verify the Finished Features
Agree how the profile, datum relationships, fitting surfaces and other critical requirements will be inspected. Identify the final material and surface condition and the record required. Functional tool acceptance may include checks beyond the dimensional report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are wire EDM and sinker EDM interchangeable?
No. The feature, access and route requirements differ. Submit the complete geometry for a specific review.
Should the drawing include finished dimensions?
Identify the finished requirements clearly and separate any agreed process allowance or intermediate condition.
Can an internal corner be assumed to be perfectly sharp?
No. Specify the required geometry and obtain confirmation for the actual route instead of relying on a visual impression.
Are heat-treated components suitable for this route?
Submit the specified material and treatment condition for review. Suitability and sequence must be confirmed for the actual part.
Can EDM evidence from one factory represent another?
It should be attributed to the actual operation and site. Confirm the manufacturing arrangement for your order.
Can I request EDM for any material?
Material suitability must be confirmed for the proposed process. Do not infer universal material coverage from a process page.
Do I need to identify a cutting or fitting function?
Yes. The working role helps define the features and surface conditions that must be preserved and inspected.
Is the EDM surface always the final surface?
Not necessarily. State the required delivered condition and any additional finishing or verification.
Does a finished profile photo prove its accuracy?
No. Request the appropriate measurement method and approved results for the specified characteristics.
What should I send for an EDM review?
Provide geometry, material condition, functional feature, datum references, surface requirements and the required acceptance record.
Discuss Your Requirements
Share your part type, current drawing revision and the question you need to resolve. Include the quantity and delivery destination when a quotation is required.
